Angels trade #10 prospect Kyle Johnson for Collin Cowgill

I think there's a bit of over reaction going on here.  I like Kyle Johnson and think he'll have a career as a defensive specialist and pinch runner in the major leaguers, which could lead to good, long career for him.  But Cowgill was a bit of a necessity.  J.B. Shuck is possibly the worst defensive OF in baseball and is LH.  Hamilton is LH.  Calhoun is LH.

With Pujols needing to DH as much as possible, this forces Trumbo to play 1B pretty often.  The Angels needed a RH bat.  Now in a year and a half, they would've been blessed with Grichuk and Cron as those RH bats, but until that time comes, Cowgil serves as the top option there.

Plus it isn't as if Cowgill is a complete pushover.  Good plate discipline, solid power, speed and defense.  I like him as a depth option.  And perhaps the Angels will get lucky and someone will actually believe i Shuck's numbers this season and trade a pitching prospect for him.  You never know.

Would I have made the trade?  No.  But I can see the side of the argument that would.
