Minasian says Ohtani will not be traded

In a weird way this is an obvious statement. He's an MVP caliber player and the team is up for sale. Ohtani is a small piece that makes acquiring the Angels exciting, with the bravado from a new owner that they will be able to resign him, etc.

It would be like trading Lebron James in the middle of trying to sell the team. Just doesn't make sense from a business or enticement standpoint.

Cool. I don't really care though unless they're planning to make him an Angel for life.

They are going to make him an Angel for life.

There were two big absolutes toward the end of last year:   Nevin was getting the manager job and Ohtani wasn't going anywhere.

Only guys that spend too much time on Twitter (and Yankee/dodger fans) believed otherwise.

There is zero chance Ohtani plays anywhere else for the next 10 years.

It's going to be Trout + Ohtani and build around that.   There will still be several higher payrolls in baseball also.

Even if new ownership doesn't substantially increase payroll, I think new ownership could be different just in how much autonomy the baseball ops department gets.

The best GM's in baseball have no desire to work for Arte Moreno since he interferes with baseball ops. A new owner who stays out of the way would allow the Angels to bring in a top tier GM and let them do their job unencumbered.

that's really my point though. everything you said about new ownership is COULD. whichever road is taken with ohtani those ramifications WILL be hugely important to the team's future.

i'm happy arte will be gone. i think he's an unintentionally although willfully bad owner. i hope the new owner is significantly better.

and what if we continue to lose next year, which is arguably probable, rather than likely, and ohtani wants to test FA? what happens to your guarantee then? because he's already put some pressure on the organization since the end of the regular season, albeit respectfully as japanese players tend to do.

The Angels are not going to "continue to lose" next year.    (your definition of "lose").

Ohtani wants to be and Angel and the Angels are going to pay him.   End of story.

You are way more confident than anyone should be. This team won 73 games last year. Two of their top three players have injury concerns.  The team has holes in the bullpen, and need to upgrade multiple offensive positions including overall depth.  Lastly we have no idea who the next owner will be or when they will take over. Because of that we don’t know how much money will be spent to upgrade this 73 win team.  They could upgrade the team and win 10 more games and finish 20 games out of first. I have no idea if that keeps Ohtani here.
Also the guarantee that Nevin was coming back has a lot more to do with ownership being unresolved than anything else. He signed a one year deal.

Nevins deal was appropriate for his managerial pedigree.  Had nothing at all to do with the owner limbo.   That is just conjecture put out by this forum and other Nevin haters.  His next managerial deal will be multi year and The Angels will win 85+ if they stay relatively healthy.

it's a great time to be an Angel fan!

If Ohtani doesn't want to sign the extension then the smart move is to trade him.

“We don’t feel like we’re that far away,” Minasian said. “We don’t, and that’s the biggest reason (to keep Ohtani).”

Sorry but of course it had to do with the ownership situation. How many managers get one year deals?  I’m not a Nevin hater.

Show me the quote from an Angel executive stating that.

also. Don't waste your time because it does not exist.

1 yr deal was fair and shows support for how Nevin brought the team through the crisis.

If he wins in '23 then he gets a multi year extension regardless if there is a new owner by then

Arte is going to leave it up to new owner if they want to sign Ohtani. If I'm new owner I offer Ohtani 8 years at 360 million, with opt after 3 years. I give him and his agent a certain time frame to accept or decline offer. If they decline offer, I call in Mike Trout and ask if he wants to stay or give me list of teams, he will accept trade to. Next, I find best luxury suite for AW members to enjoy at any game.

Would we be going to the game with your bad takes or without your bad takes?
