Gameday Thread: Angels @ A's (10/5/22 1pm Pacific): Ohtani on the mound to wrap up the season

Recommended Posts

The last four games weren't broadcast on MLB Extra Innings, so my last images were of their belated winning streak. If they could have finished the last series more competently maybe a thin veneer of optimism could have made the picture for next year less depressing. But they seem to have reverted to form and reminded everyone of their chronic problems.

16 games below five hundred. 73 wins. And with Ohtani perhaps having the best season in history. And Trout putting up elite numbers. Not to mention Rengifo, Ward and a handful of others having career years.

That means they need to be 12 or more games better next year to even be in the low end of the playoff conversation. Finally getting away from devastating long term injuries will help. They are overdue for some good luck there. And plenty of work is ahead to improve the product for next season.

It was fun having the compensation of watching Ohtani, Trout (when in the lineup) and some of the young guys. But it is a team sport, and winning is the objective. I think they can at least be on the margin of contention with some changes and better luck. And giving Ohtani a first time experience of a playoff chase may be critical in keeping him long term.
