No wonder that the most prestigious pitching award is named after him.

This lends some credence to the theory that pitch counts and limited innings actually make today's pitchers more prone to injury, not less.

Nah, injuries to arms in the past were a lot more prevalent.  Most where not physical freaks like Cy Young.

And in a time where it was pretty common to pitch a complete game most of your starts. I think his ERA over that many games is the most impressive. I think that Nolan Ryans number of complete games is actually more impressive given the era he pitched in.
