In the new CBA do they still have the qualifying offer thing going on ? Make a qualifying offer, offer is declined, team gets a comp pick.  Is that situation still going on ?

IX. Free Agent Compensation

IF the parties agree on an international draft, teams will receive supplemental draft compensation for losing first time free agent players. The compensation is based on the status of the former team’s revenue payee/ payor/ CBT status and the amount that the player signs for as follows:

Free Agent Compensation

Former club status 35M TG/ 18M AAV 55M TG/23M AAV 100M TG/ 30M AAV 150M TG/ 40M AAV
Revenue Payee 3rd round Comp B Comp A Comp A+ 3rd round
Revenue Payor --- 3rd Round Comp B Comp A
CBT Payor --- --- 3rd Round Comp B

The Associated Press

Compensation tiers are based on:

  • the total guarantee (TG) OR the average annual value (AAV) of the player’s new contract, whichever is higher, and
  • The Revenue paying and CBT status of the former club
  • The player must be a first time free agent, and have been with the former team for at least one full season.
  • There is no qualifying offer of salary or arbitration required for compensation.

He's actually a pretty close comp to Sandoval. (No, this isn't a 'Trade Sandoval' post).

Skubal (age 25): 288 IP, 4.31 ERA, 4.36 FIP, 1.22 WHIP, 9.8 SO9, four years of control after '22.
Sandoval (age 25): 247 IP, 4.15 ERA, 4.06 FIP, 1.36 WHIP, 9.5 SO9, four years of control after '22.

It'll be interesting to see what he fetches if he gets moved, and his availability could also indicate it's a good market to sell.

Lol, this is what I meant to put

maybe snatch Wendle or Rojas while they're available? On the other hand, they're no better than Fletcher or Rengifo if they have any sort of regression.

Bullpen arms are a hot commodity and bullpen arms are way too volatile.

Teams will salivate over the velo from left side. However he doesn’t have a second pitch he can control. I’d sell also. Some of these ‘21 draft guys are going to be relievers. Also, Suarez is probably best suited for the bullpen.

I'm still thinking Perry gets bold and brings in Blake Snell, who because of the contract won't cost more than a 40-45 FV prospect, and even that could be partially offset by the return they'll get for Syndergaard.

Padres just lost Gore to the IL with an elbow injury. They called up Lamet who is far from a sure thing. I don’t think they’ll be trading away pitching. But I guess they could trade for an upgrade in the rotation then trade away Snell.
