Trout WAR update

Recommended Posts

Trout may retire as the greatest player to have ever walked on to a baseball field in the young history of our planet.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. I'll be very happy if, 20 years from now, we see Trout's name on the top half of this list of the greatest outfielders in major league history (sorted by WAR). Or be among the 20 or so position players in the exclusive 100+ WAR, hopefully joining Albert Pujols (who is at 87.1 now). It is amazing to think that Trout is almost 15% there - and he's not yet 22 years old.

Here's the AL leaderboard from baseball reference

dWAR listed in a few select cases:

1) Machado 4.5

2) Cabrera 4.0 (-0.4 dWAR)

3) Davis 3.6

4) Longoria 3.3

5) Pedroia 3.3

6) Mauer 3.3

7) Donaldson 3.1

8) Trout 3.0 (-1.2 dWAR)

9) Peralta 2.9

10) Hardy 2.7

12) Kendrick 2.7

27) Trumbo 1.7

50) Pujols 1.3

56) Bourjos 1.2 (0.1 dWAR)

408) Hamilton -0.4 (0.1 dWAR)

According to baseball reference dWAR, Josh Hamilton is the best defensive outfielder on the team and Mike Trout is the third worst defender in the American league.

Fangraphs WAR for Trout is 50% higher even though it's supposedly based on the same data.

WAR = BS.

Not really. dWAR is absolutely flawed, but WAR in general is still a solid representation of a player's value.

More Trout pron

"As good as Trout was last year, he was that great while only making contact 82% of the time, and those contact issues carried over in April. His contact improved in May without being reflected in his strikeout rate, but in June, he’s hitting everything he swings at and the result is a dramatic drop-off in strikeouts. Basically, Trout is showing signs of dramatic improvement in the the one area you could kind of point to as a deficiency. A strikeout-free version of Mike Trout is essentially the perfect baseball player."

He would be Pujols in his prime with more speed and a little less power.

WAR has a .94 correlation to on field results. It's better than the Pythag  records.

WAR is a great stat. Obviously, the defensive side of advanced stats haven't been fully figure out but it values offense, pitching and base running in a good way.

WAR isn't the only stat to look at but it does a great job of combining the important part of a player's game.

It also shows how superior Trout was last year to Cabrera in less time.

I like it as a snapshot. If it's close I use other stats.

Exactly how I approach it.

I like using OPS and looking at park adjusted stats because those tell more of the picture.

So many people are caught up in looking at just batting average and the basic stats without putting the park they play in into consideration.
