With no sports on tv to fill the evening "watch whatever" quota, i have found myself watching way too much The First 48.

What the hell is going on in Tulsa?

Word of caution if you ever find yourself in Miami.

Stay out of the Pork and Beans

More TCM watching recommendations. Apparently they’re having a Akira Kurosawa/Toshiro Mifune marathon today.

Recommend pretty much all of it but definitely Yojimb, High and Low, Seven Samurai and Rashomon. Though Drunken Angel and Stray Dog for early morning watching are good too though those start like right now so that might be too late.image.thumb.jpeg.07949a7f5c722a9d222b30058c411753.jpeg

Just finished S2 of The Expanse

Spoiler

Strange ending to the season. I don't like the way the writers bring a monster infected with the Protomolecule.

And why does all 3 of the areas want this stuff? It's destructive and has no positive value in my eyes. Maybe I haven't watched enough Sci-fi series.

The protomolecule changes.  Season 3 kind of answers it.  But it's intentions are still kind of a mystery.

And I think everyone wants the stuff, because they see it as a way of destroying the other side.  Season 3 kind of sees a resolution to that also.

Watched two gambling movies yesterday on Netflix.

Mississippi Grind with Ryan Reynolds and some dude I never heard of. Better than expected, but kind of a poor mans Rounders, but not heavy on poker strategy and more of just a gambling movie with the ups and downs. The unknown dude plays a great degenerate that we all see in casinos, card rooms, and the horse track. Metacritic: 77%, Rotten Tomatoes: 91%, IMDB: 6.4/ 10. I'd lean towards the 6-7/10 range. Worth the watch if you like movies like Rounders and The Color of Money.

21 with Kevin Spacey and some other recognizable faces. Based on the book, "Bringing Down the House" which was based on a group of kids from MIT that created a card counting system and destroyed Vegas. I knew about this a long time ago because a poker pro named Andy Bloch was one of the members and talked a bit about it, pretty interesting. One of my favorite channel dropper type of movies that is easy to follow, interesting in topic, and just easy to digest....just kind of a fun movie. Metacritic: 48%, Rotten Tomatoes: 36%, IMDB: 6.8/ 10. Probably the same 6-7 range.....not going to win any awards, but a good movie that you won't end and feel like you wasted your time.

It's my least favorite component of the series. I love the rivalries between the different factions, and the protomolecule is just a tool for each side to try and gain an edge on the others.

I finished 'Messiah' last night. I have to say I'm a little torn. I don't like that the show goes back and forth between him 'obviously' being the messiah and him 'obviously' being a fraud. I wish it kept it's distance a little more, but that is just me. I do like that with every big piece of evidence in one direction they plant a sliver of doubt.

The show seems clearly headed for a second season but I would've liked to see them leave it there where it ends. Part of what makes faith a thing is our inability to get close to it. We all want to be converted like Thomas in the bible but real faith lies in not knowing. With that in mind, letting us sit with this character and analyze the factual outcomes of his actions kind of misses the point.

Also, I love Michelle Monaghan.

I kind of liked that they kept changing the back and forth is or isn't he.  I also like he isn't like doing miracles just to do miracles.  Like that kid who's mother took her out of kemo to see him.

This show is shaping up to be one of those that after it's all over, you will almost have to rewatch to see exactly what all his actions meant.

I like the back and forth but it feels like it swings too hard either way. Like healing the boy who was shot and walking on water, then the reveal that he was raised by a magician. I guess I want a little more subtlety there. And then, as you said, if he did really do all these things, why does he let the girl with cancer die? My guess is that they are leading up to it being for some greater purpose. Like I said, I would've liked more distance from these reported miracles, rather than letting us see them if only to allow us to side with Michelle Monaghan's perspective more.

Good news @Lou.  Nothing to watch, so going to rewatch Battlestar Galactica.  🚀

Colonel Tigh's turn as the show equivalent of Al Queda leader is still perhaps my favorite tv moment. How so many snowflakes refused to watch after this cemented my love for the show's gustiness.
