I'm watching the Gabriel Fernandez Trials on Netflix. This is the most heart wrenching thing I've ever seen.

Yeah, I saw that, and was going to start it.  Then I realized it was that story from a few years back.  I love Netflix's crime documentaries.  But this is one I'll have to be in the right state of mind to watch, because I know it's going to be depressing as hell.

Not only were his mother and boyfriend straight up evil, the system failed that boy tremendously

Hereditary

This is a strong recommend for anyone who has young children; please let us know what you think! I’m not really big on horror but Ari Aster has it figured out. That opening shot is one of my absolute favorites, zooming in on the doll house until the camera focuses on one room and then the dad walks in; brilliant. This is a movie that made me very uncomfortable but also required quite a bit of focus. There is more than enough going on to prompt a second viewing, if you can stomach it.

Endeavour

Spoiler

Into season 4 now

Morse has his flaws like all the great detectives. But his solve rate is extremely high.

It's really hard to see him get treated like he is a problem and they block his sergeant results. Blight tells him he has created many enemies in high places. How? Insulting a couple of old time detectives that got lazy on an investigation?

I know it's a show, but the the guy is the best in the entire department and gets treated poorly.

Ok, enough of a rant. I know it's a show and that's part of the story line.

He is awkward around girls. Maybe things change later on. Amazon only has 6 seasons and @Lou says he is on season 8. Hopefully they come soon.

Really am enjoying this show. Keeps getting better and the acting is solid.

Small bone to pick.

I use closed caption when I watch any streaming service. I watch a lot of foreign shows and you miss too much without it.

Amazon Prime. While watching the first show they use a black box with white lettering and it's really easy to see, read and keep up. After the first show it switches to yellow lettering with no black box behind it making it difficult to see and read when trying to keep up with other languages. It blends into the background colors at times. I have to get out and reload every time.

Netflix uses the same format no matter how many shows in a row you watch.

Ok. I'm done ranting.

Anyone else experience this?

Took a look at Endeavor and liked it far more than Sherlock. It is funny to watch a detective series in which all of the crime scene procedures are antiquated and police randomly pick up evidence with bare hands. We are so used to the CSI over scientific cop dramas that every piece of sand is examined from a two block radius at a beach murder scene.

I agree, but not sure why you are comparing Endeavour to Sherlock.

The Farewell

I liked this a lot more than I expected to. Well acted, well directed, it's funny, it's sad... it feels very real.

It's thematically a look at the differences between eastern and western culture, but more specifically about identity. When does someone become American and what does that mean for your other identities? I found the family dynamics here so interesting. The Chinese had such an aspirational view of America yet thumbed their nose at more American perspectives. They'll send their kids to school here but can't understand why they might stay or pickup American opinions - it's why Billi (the main character) isn't invited to China to see her terminally ill grandmother despite being the person closest to her. At the same time it's Billie's American identity that compels her to want to stay in China with her grandmother after everyone else plans to move on with their lives.

It's that seeming contradiction that is at the heart of this film which, for me, is a solid recommendation.
