OC Register: Ty Buttrey hopes to return to Angels after retiring

Recommended Posts

Reliever Ty Buttrey, who abruptly retired just before Opening Day last year, said on social media that he would like to pitch again in 2022.

Buttrey was placed on the restricted list last year, and the Angels can’t currently talk to him or his representatives because of the lockout.

Buttrey, 28, said in a statement last April that he was retiring because he “lost the drive” to compete at the major league level.

Buttrey and his wife hosted a Twitter Spaces chat on Sunday night, in which Buttrey announced that he hoped to come back. He said he would like to return to the Angels, but conceded that the decision is up to them, and also complicated by the lockout.

Buttrey posted a 4.30 ERA in 115 games with the Angels from 2018-20, including a 3.98 mark in his only full season, 72 games in 2019. He struggled in Spring Training in 2021 and was optioned just before he decided to retire.
