Lahiri came within a foot a forcing a playoff.

Cameron Smith, 9 birdies, 3 bogeys. He won by one stroke.

$3.6 million, nice payday.

I thought it was 10 birdies and 4 bogeys?

When was the last time the winner of any tournament only had 4 pars in the last round?

Watching the Match Play tourney and Scheffler has let a 5 hole lead dissipate vs Dustin Johnson in four straight holes. Johnson looks loose but what I noticed is he didn't throttle back on his drive on 16 whacking a 308 yard drive.

That isn't news, 300 plus drives are commonplace on the tour these days. The average on tours is 295 yards with Chambeau's at 320.

Now go back to when driving distances were first tabulated in 1980 and that number is 257 yards. Of the weekend hackers out there about 24% that can hit as far as 250 yards. 16% hit between 250 and 275, 11% hit between 275 and 300 and only 4% can crack it over 300.  So over half of the weekend warriors can hit a PGA pro level or better in 1980 standards. They can't score better, part of which is longer courses, but they can launch the ball.

Put todays clubs and balls into the hands of the players of 1980 and how much further do they hit it? My guess is an increase but not nearly as far as present day players for a couple of reasons. The emphasis on accuracy was greater back then since they didn't have the distance to blast past hazards so their swings are different. They don't have computer shot trackers to hone that perfect swing for those monster drives. I am guessing that their average increases 25-30 but not 50 yards in distance.

Johnson couldn't overcome that deficit and ran out of gas losing to Scheffler. Match play doesn't reward birdies and eagles with anything more than win a hole so the stroke play scorecard doesn't matter. Johnson could have beat Scheffler today in regular stroke play but now he is just another spectator for the final round.

Just going by the Masters site. He's listed there.

That's the PGA's list. He's on it because he's a past winner and hasn't asked to be taken off of it, like Nicklaus, Player, etc.

The Masters is a different entity. They have yet to put out their list.
