Cam Smith wins the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Maui to win the opening tournament of the new year (yes, I know the season was already underway). He shot a ridiculous -34 to win by one over Jon Rahm. Matt Jones finished third at -32.

On to Oahu next week for the Sony Open.

If you haven't seen the crowd reaction when Sam Ryder aces 16 a few minutes ago, find it.

It was insane.

I heard the roar from two rooms away. Then they replayed Tiger’s ace there from 1997.

X-man was in front, and then double bogeyed to fall one back.

Hilarious that the PGA Tour’s Twitter guy says that after Ryder made his ace…

”Ive never seen anything like this.  They are throwing WATER bottles on the course!!!”

Yeah buddy.  Water bottles…..Come on, man.

What, you don't think the people of Phoenix understand the importance of staying hydrated?

Lefty has been in the middle of the Saudi golf league startup controversy. He made rather disparaging remarks about the pga tour this week, making it look like he was ready to jump ship. Fans and players alike took a lot of shots at him this week, enough so that he offered a rather droll apology. Well now he’s losing sponsors. KPMG has dropped him as well as a couple others, and Callaway has put their sponsorship of him on hold. Phil was also the host of the Bob Hope classic and the pga has severed that.

This is a sticky issue that gets into free speech as well as supporting your employer. Seems like a lot of overreaction by the corporations.

The Arnold Palmer Invitational is plain nutz. The course is playing so difficult no player can really make headway.

Woodland eagles the 16th for a one shot lead, only to double bogey the 17th unable to get his ball out of the rough from his tee shot. The rough was set at 4" to start the tournament and hasn't been cut since. With the rain the grass has grown at least 2 more inches. Players are hacking as hard as they can to move a ball forward 50 yards.

Gooch had the lead for about two minutes then fell completely off the leader board early in the round.  Hovland with the share of the lead can't get out of a sand trap cleanly and rocketed his ball 40 feet past to hole on 18.

So few birdie putts today and it doesn't matter distance. Misses are from as short as 6 feet which are usually PGA gimmies in length.

Scheffler just drove his ball into the rough on 18. He has a 1 shot lead and that could easily dissappear. There are 4 players 1 shot back so it is anyone's game to win but can anyone make that one winning shot?

Scheffler holds on to win. Had an amazing lag putt to about a foot on 18 to seal the deal.

Azinger was talking about how Arnie wanted to host a US Open at Bay Hill but was always turned down. Seems their tournament committee tried to accomplish that kind of course setup on their own.

Pretty amazing looking at the leaderboard that the tourney winner shot even par. Others that started the round in the top twosomes shot 3,4, even 5 over to lose. Any of those three shot par they win the trophy. This course bitch slapped even the slightest mistakes.

Gooch shot 7 over 43 on the front nine!

Horschel shot 4 over 40 on the front.

It was just like a US Open on Sunday at Bay Hill.  I missed the last half hour of it, and couldn’t believe Scottie Scheffler won it.  Tough day out there.
