OC Register: Angels move Ray Montgomery from front office to bench coach

Recommended Posts

The Angels have moved Ray Montgomery, who had been their director of player personnel, into the dugout as the bench coach for the 2022 season.

Mike Gallego, who had been the bench coach, remains on the staff in a role to be determined.

The Angels confirmed that Phil Nevin, Benji Gil and Bill Hasselman were also added to the major-league coaching staff, but the team has not announced roles for any of those three. They also are expected to continue adding to the staff.

Montgomery will be working in uniform on a big-league coaching staff for the first time. Montgomery, 52, played briefly in the majors as an outfielder with the Houston Astros from 1996-98. Since he stopped playing, he spent most of his career in scouting with the Milwaukee Brewers, including six years as the scouting director.

The Angels hired him for a front-office role after the 2020 season.
