Except they are.  And I’m guessing in most of Abreu’s seasons he was on base more times than the guy who lead the league in hitting.

No they're not. Abreu struck out 1,840 times. Gwynn 434.

Abreu was good.  Gwynn was great.

I think people are missing the point here with this discussion. 

No one is trying to downplay Tony Gwynn's accomplishments; he is unquestionably a HOF'er. He won batting titles. Super neat.

The point is to say Abreu isn't as far off as people would think. On the surface, mentioning Abreu in the same sentence as Gwynn is laughable. It's funny @Blargmentions having to "dig deeper" because that's exactly what it takes to show you Abreu is comparable. And I said comparable, not equal.

Also, we all know defense means fuck all for the HOF because David Ortiz is a first ballot. But since we're on the subject, Gwynn wasn't exactly a wizard in the outfield.
