OC Register: Angels claim infielder Andrew Velazquez on waivers

Recommended Posts

The Angels claimed infielder Andrew Velazquez on waivers from the New York Yankees on Friday, adding middle infield depth.

Velazquez, 27, has played for the Tampa Bay Rays, Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Guardians and Yankees in parts of three seasons in the majors. He has a career .525 OPS.

In 2021, Velazquez played 28 games for the Yankees, including 20 starts at shortstop. He also started the wild-card game, which the Yankees lost to the Boston Red Sox.

The Angels added more middle infield depth by adding Brandon Davis to the 40-man roster, preventing him from exercising his right to become a minor-league free agent.

Davis, 24, moved through three levels of the Angels’ system in 2021, from Class-A to Triple-A, with a combined OPS of .923.

A product of Lakewood High, Davis was the Dodgers’ fifth-round draft pick in 2015. He was sent to the Rangers as part of the Yu Darvish trade in 2017.
