OC Register: Angels’ Shohei Ohtani wins another award, this from his peers

Recommended Posts

Shohei Ohtani added another award to his list by winning the Sporting News Player of the Year Award, which is chosen by a vote of Major League players.

Ohtani received 56% of the votes, while the Toronto Blue Jays’ Vladimir Guerrero Jr. finished second with 29.3%.

Ohtani also may win the Players’ Choice Major League Player of the Year when it’s announced later Thursday. That award is given by the Major League Baseball Players’ Association, although through a vote of players.

Earlier this month, Ohtani was honored by Baseball Digest and Baseball America with their top individual player awards. He also won the Commissioner’s Historic Achievement Award.

Ohtani is the favorite to win the American League MVP Award, which will be announced Nov. 18.

The Angels’ star is coming off a season in which he was the first player since Babe Ruth in more than 100 years to have sustained success as a pitcher and hitter.

Ohtani, 27, hit .257 with 46 homers – third most in the majors – and a .965 OPS. On the mound, he went 9-2 with a 3.18 ERA in 23 starts.
