Internal Shortstop

I still believe in Rengifo. I think he could be a solidly above-average player fast if things click for him. Power, speed, defense, walks, etc. and if we spent enough on pitching I have no problem giving him the role Opening Day and letting him have a couple months to run with it.

Just have Mayfield handy or another capable SS on the bench or SLC, even if it’s just a Cliff Pennington redux-type.

I want to believe this as well.  But I just can't at this point.  Not to the point where I'd hand him the job without a highly capable backup.  Whether that would mean moving Fletch over and filling his spot or outright at SS.  And Mayfield is not that capable backup.  He sucks.  Not getting someone good or at least solid to field the SS position would be a missed opportunity.

I believe Rengifo will be an everyday SS at some point.  But I wouldn't count on it in 2022.  You just can't.  We've seen enough of him to know that he could be absolutely terrible.

And I don't know if it's something they're trying to get him to do, but he's been a GB machine.  Are they trying to turn him into Fletch?  Slap the ball around and try to run for it?  I sure as shit hope not.  He's got pop and the short wall at home in RF would play to him if he hit the ball in the air.

I kinda get the sense they're asking him to play 80's baseball.  But then again, I don't trust Maddon and try to blame everything on him.  He's the exact guy that goes to another team and kills it.  But for now, unless they can unlock his potential I wouldn't bank on him being an average major leaguer and they should have at least that going into 2022.

The internal options are not great.

Would not have been a problem, if Moreno had allowed pitchers to be signed, instead of going on TEN years now since a solid FA pitcher was signed.

Just inexcusable, and meantime he signs THREE sluggers, two of whom underperformed and a third got hurt in seemingly every way possible in 2021.

Something changed since Nibs was signed.

This got me wondering where he is. Hasn't played anywhere since 2019. Retired?

He signed a minor league deal with the Yankees in Dec. '19. There was no '20 minor league season and he got placed on the AAA IL at the start of the '21 season.
