Jerry Brown for President

Recommended Posts

He's making hard nosed decisions and working with both parties in the state to get his initiatives passed. While there hasn't been a huge dent in the deficit, there has definitely been progress we haven't seen in the state since the Reagan days.

There has been a sizable debt reduction, too.

Well which is it?

Debt and deficit are two different things, cowboy.s

Also, not sure why he said there hasn't been a huge dent in the deficit. Three years ago we were facing a deficit of $40 billion and had to cut drastically. This year we are projected to have between $1.2 and $4.4 billion in surplus. Even if that number is off (which I'm sure it is) it will be off by $5 billion or so, not $40 billion.

While he is in solid physical shape for a 75 year-old, it's a lot to ask someone to be president from ages 78-82.

Look at how it greyed W's and Obama's hair in one term.    Then again, Brown doesn't have much hair left up there.

Even Reagan didn't turn 78 until AFTER he left the WH.

Is deficit the amount over budget we are and debt the total overall debt?

Yes. Deficit (usually) adds to debt. But if you have a deficit of $2bb and are allocating $6bb of revenue to pay back debt then the net result is a $2bb decrease of the debt and changing the due date and interest rate (to presumably be more favorable) of $2bb more of the debt.

In any event, if the surplus is real that's not even what is happening. The debt is being paid down and with the surplus nothing is being added to it.

He had a huge tax increase (retroactive to te beginning of 2012) and you call it a financial fix?

This state is still hoplessly bankrupt.

After the 2012 election and the tax increase prop, didn't he admit afterwards that the increase was going to be more than they let on and that they purposely withheld that info?

Yeah, he doesn't belong anywhere near the White House, although he certainly has the ability to lie as well as the rest of them.

Every man who has held the office in my lifetime (except perhaps Reagan) appears to have aged at least ten years for every four spent in the White House. The job has to carry stresses that most of us cannot imagine. That is why I have never thought much of it when the president (no matter who it is) frequently leaves to get some time away from the White House.

When he left as governor in January 1983, there was supposedly a surplus then, which is good considering that the state was just exiting a bad recession.

Say what you want about the Moonbeam stuff, but he's always lived within his means, even to the point of refusing to live in the mansion when governor for the first 8 years.

He does seem to have friends in a few unions, but it's overstated.
