According to ESPN, the Athletics are going to make their intentions known regarding relocation to Las Vegas after the end of the World Series. Considering that ownership is going to make at least one more visit here to look at stadium sites...maybe. They are said to prefer a location near the Strip. One site being mentioned more than most is near the Raiders' practice facility. Another is near Las Vegas Motor Speedway north of town off I-15.

I certainly hope they want to be near the strip.....

Unless they have plans to continue their shitty attendance, which would be a classic Athletic move.

One potential big change: in an interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal, A’s president Dave Kaval opened the possibility of the team funding its own mixed-use development in Las Vegas if the best ballpark site is located off the Strip and off the Resort Corridor. This a first: A’s ownership has always looked to some sort of public-private partnership on the ballpark front, but real-estate developers gonna develop, and controlling all portions of a Vegas baseball city may be appealing to John Fisher and crew, a la The Battery and Wrigleyville.

That orientation can be seen in the three major site contenders mentioned by local politicos and insiders for a ballpark site. The first is a parcel south of the far end of the Las Vegas strip, south of Mandalay Bay and other recent growth in the area. The second is the Festival Grounds site at Sahara and Las Vegas Blvd. The third is the revival of a site once pitched as a Las Vegas Raiders stadium site: the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino, located across I-15 from Caesars Palace on Flamingo Road. The site was also mentioned as a potential ballpark site early in the A’s siting process.

These three sites represent the views of officials who have met with the A’s; indeed, the A’s may have a totally different view of where they want a ballpark, and results of traffic studies may also change a ballpark site shortlist. Those studies are due in October, fitting within the stance by the A’s to release a shortlist in late October or early November.

Perhaps the most striking thing to take away from the Las Vegas politicos: they’ve gone from totally dismissing the possibility of the Athletics moving to Las Vegas and now see it as a inevitability. That may change should Oakland’s stance on the downtown waterfront site changes, but as of now the Vegas locals see it as a matter not of if, but of when.

You think that would be best? I imagine most Vegas locals don't live near the strip and probably want to avoid it as much as possible. It's not football where nearly every game is on a weekend so you can spend all day there, work isn't a concern that day, each visiting team plays there once a year, and you only have to go 8-10 times a year (if you count preseason). Baseball is every day, it's on weekdays, it's after work (or even during). Football is an event and baseball is a game.

I'm not a Vegas expert and maybe locals live near the strip, frequent it often, and like going down there. But I think for baseball, you really need to focus on making things better and more convenient for the local fan base compared to football. Will Angels fans show up to more games in Vegas than Oakland? Probably. But we'll have 9 games there each year. How often are they making the trip? How different is that number if the game is a 30 minute Uber away in Henderson? Now think about Vegas locals and think about the reverse situation? How much more or less often are they likely to go to a game if it's on the strip vs. in Henderson or wherever?

What about parking?

My sister lives in Vegas and she went to a preseason game for the Raiders and said it was a nightmare to find parking

I went a Golden Knights game and we had to park at a casino garage and walk

What's with building these places with no parking structures?

Las Vegas sucks in general.  Yes I have had some fun in that town but it was because I was with fun people cutting loose.

It wasn’t that Las Vegas uniquely offered anything necessary to have fun with friends.

I am just saying sometimes a group of friends get a wild itch to cut loose and they go to Las Vegas and have a great time.  My opinion is this same group in that kind of mood to cut loose is probably going to have fun going just about anywhere else.

It’s not the town.  It’s the people and their particular mood.

Las Vegas itself sucks.

If the Athletics move to Clark County, MLBTV will remove the Athletics from the "home market" blackout list for southern Oregon. That would get me the 19 or so games the Angels play against the Athletics, which have never been carried on local cable or on free TV. Seattle and SF both have their games on local cable. Thus that would be great for me. But I'd still be sad for the end of history provided by Catfish, Reggie, Ricky and the rest of those guys, who despite the owner ran a successful three-peat many years ago. And I always got a laugh out of the mule.

Please destroy more businesses and put it near the Rio/Palms.  That Speedway location is fucking out there.  It’s beautiful walking over the closed bridge to the Raiders crib.  And for GK games, you just park at MGM and walk over.

I have been to a couple of games at T-Mobile and it isn't hard. They also have shuttle busses that go from different parts of town (same thing for Allegiant Stadium). The stadium was never going to have a ton of parking around it anyway. There are a couple of parking lots being added nearby that will have stadium shuttles.

The tentative plan for the baseball stadium includes an adjacent entertainment district, to include shops and restaurants.

We wouldn't be in six teams' "home markets" anymore.

As far as Reggie goes, he was part of a group that wanted to buy the A's and move them here probably 15 years ago.

  • 1 month later...

I was beginning to believe that maybe the A's were playing the city to get a better deal with Oakland. Then came news within the past couple of days that they have made an offer on a parcel of land that is the right size to build a ballpark.

Being an insider... extremely loosely spoken...Hahhaha...My parents live there and my Dad was a big with Nevada Power. So, he has contacts who have asked him on that side, what will be needed/required. He recently retired and was their guy.

The Howard Hughes Foundation has donated land in Summerlin Nevada to the A's. The Howard Hughes Foundation owns Summerlin... So, they are Gonzo! This is all posturing for a fanbase and MLB.

The only cost will be the Stadium which is the work on how it will be built tax assessment etc. The land is donated.

They recently built a minor league park in Summerlin and the Golden Knights have a training site next to it. The Silver Knights is a minor league affiliate to the NHL team that built stadium  and training facility in Henderson.

No thanks to Jerry Brown, who decided to put the bullet train in no mans land, instead of from LA to Vegas.

To be fair their thought process was for workers from Silicon Valley to be able to get to work rapidly while living in the rural growth areas.... It was flawed and horribly  expensive.

This might be a shock but they want you to park at a casino.  This would entice fans to eat/drink and possibly gamble at the casino.

All of my comments are about going there to drink and gamble.

Living there is totally different.  There are some really nice places to live there.

My cousin lived there for a long time.  His family owned mortuaries and he was assigned to run one of them in Las Vegas for awhile.  He loved living in LV but running a mortuary in Las Vegas was just weird.  He had way too many stories.

Locals don't gamble.  However we do enjoy the shows, sporting events and the fine dining.

However I stopped going to the strip once they started charging for parking.  As a person who gre up in the 80s there, charging fir parking is sacrilegious.
