OC Register: José Suarez clamps down after rough first, but Angels still lose to A’s again

ANAHEIM — José Suarez showed the Angels something on Saturday night.

Suarez gave up three quick runs but responded well to get into the sixth inning with no further damage, although those runs were enough for the Angels to lose 3-1 to the Oakland A’s.

His solid outing was spoiled by the Angels’ lack of production, as they lost for the 14th time in 18 games against Oakland.

Suarez picked up the first two outs of the game quickly and then he got ahead of Matt Olson, 0-and-2. His third pitch was a fastball at the top of the zone, and Olson launched it over the right-field fence.

Suarez then barely missed the zone on two straight pitches to walk Mark Canha. He then threw Chad Pinder a 1-and-2 changeup over the outside corner and Pinder went the other way to line into the right-center field gap, driving in Canha.

While Suarez was barely missing his spots — or else simply getting victimized by good A’s hitting — in those situations, he did leave a 1-and-2 changeup over the heart of the plate to Matt Chapman. Chapman yanked a double down the line to drive in the third run.

Suarez, though, responded well to that difficult stretch.

He retired 10 of the next 11 hitters on his way to a 5-2/3 inning performance, with no more runs on the board. Suarez has a 3.67 ERA through 88-1/3 innings this season.

Suarez’s nice rebound from the first inning certainly helped his ERA, but didn’t do much to help the Angels win, because the hitters gave him no support whatsoever.

James Kaprielian, a product of Beckman High in Irvine and UCLA, blanked the Angels on two hits over six innings. The Angels only had two at-bats with a runner in scoring position against Kaprielian.

The Angels finally got on the board in the seventh with the help of a call overturned on replay.

A’s pitcher Deolis Guerra fell to the ground after stepping on first for the apparent third out, and the ball popped out of his glove. After that overturned call extended the inning, Jose Rojas delivered a two-out RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-1.
