Interesting Angel Stats

I read this on FB last night and while what was posted was slightly off I was still surprised by the actual results.  Angels bullpen this year has been bad.  What’s crazy is we are 53-4 in games we are leading going into the 8th inning.  We are 61-0 in games we are leading going into the 9th.

Wow, this is an interesting stat. Angel middle relievers have been horrible. We need to resign Raisel. I would like to see the Angels team ERA by inning for the season.

There’s a few different ways to view this.  
One is we need at least two more solid arms in the pen.  Bring by Cishek but use him correctly.  Bring back Iglesias.  Two, we need our starters to be allowed to go deeper into games.  An extra out or two could have a ripple effect for the following days. 
Three, with a healthy line up we would be getting to bullpens earlier and creating more leads deep into games.  
Obviously there will be regression, we won’t go undefeated when leading late, but if you are inclined to be optimistic, this is nice to look at.

The Angels are also 22-10 (.688) in 1-run games this season; the .688 winning percentage leads the Majors.

Angels best record in 1-run games came in 1985, when the team went 30-13 (.698) in 1-run contests.

Our middle relievers were awful. It seems like we had a lot of 1 and 2 run deficits quickly turn into 4 and 5 runs deficits, games that wouldn't factor into the statistic but maybe games we win if the offense is given a chance to score a few runs late. But Iglesias definitely has to be a priority this offseason.

Add Mayers to those coming back.   Outside of a horrid May, has been solid enough.

May: 11 innings, 7.71 ERA, 2.06 WHIP, 20/7 Ks/BBs

Otherwise: 54.2 innings, 3.40 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 62/15 Ks/BBs

Re-sign Iglesias.

Bring back Mayers and Cishek (no inherited RISP for Cishek).

Keep Warren (and maybe Wantz) up here.

The rest is up in the air.

not to be negative, but that's not necessarily a good thing.  There's a lot of luck to make something like that happen and it's unlikely to happen again next year.

All good Doc, I'm just here to present the historical stats. Even if they've had zero bearing on this season, which has sucked ass.

This team is going to have to bring in multiple shutdown arms. It really can’t be an option. We have to bring back Iglesias, and then we need two more guys who can consistently throw shut down innings. And only after that should guys like Cishek and Mayers be given innings.

if you've read aw.com since the early 2000s then you know the REAL genius behind the team's success is unquestionably the bench coach.

That's one way to look at it. I'd attribute it to having an elite closer that Joe Maddon has really leaned on in tight games, and a lot of luck.

I don’t know if I read this somewhere or how I came up with this position, but I look at the run differential and for every 10 runs I assume that is a game.  So the Angels are -71 so they should be about 7 games below .500.  If you are looking for a team that is playing above their heads, well the Dipoto’s are -65 runs and are 10 games over .500.
