Reigning CY Young FA

Last couple of years we had a chance to sign a reigning a cy young winner; Cole, Ryu, and Bauer.  It could happen again this season with Ray and Scherzer.

How high would you offer Ray and Scherzer?

Ray is iffy, up and down career so far.

Tops for Scherzer, 3 years/$90-$100 million

Ray is probably the guy I'd chase hardest.  He's always had the stuff, this year he finally has command.  He's my bet to be the Zack Wheeler of next seasons FA pitchers.  

I'd do somewhere between what Wheeler and Corbin ended up getting if I was going to sign front end rotation help.

I think there is about a .2% chance we actually sign the dude, but Sherzer is the guy you want. You basically hand the dud a blank check for three years... which is why it won't happen.

I've always liked and followed Ray after I drafted him in fantasy baseball in 2017 when he had a breakout season.  He's always been a K pitcher but he's had control issues at times and if you look at his stats season by season he's been average or bad more often than he's been good or real good.  Maybe he turned a corner and figured it out this year but I don't think he's a guy the Angels can afford to throw a big FA pitching contract at given the uncertainty.  Scherzer is a stud but I think he's a pipe dream because why leave a team like the Dodgers who are going to want his services to play for a team that flirts with .500.

Either way I'd choose neither of them.
