Gameday Thread: Angels @ White Sox (9/14/21): Naughton on the mound, no Adell

Ohtani is running on fumes.

Need to limit him to 4 DH starts a week.

If he struggles on the mound Friday, shut down the pitching.

This may be a clue to limit him to 550 PAs and 150 innings tops in 2022 and going forward.

He has decent experience now doing both.   But he can only do so much of both.

Possibly the worst game at the plate for Ohtani. Can't catch up to speed, guessing wildly on soft stuff. Flailing away with one handed swings. Since the all star game it's like he's a different batter than in the first half. That home run derby seemed to be a turning point for the worse.

Seems it's fatigue, too many games. The mental wear and tear of having to be the ace at the same time as the run scorer and producer. And no team incentive for post season play

After his next start rest him for most of the season as a hitter. Maybe just treat him like a conventional pitcher. Five days rest and a few more starts. Not likely to get many more homers, and his bad habits might carry into next season.

Probably better for his MVP chances if he just focusses on finishing up strong on the mound and calling it a season at the plate. He has no more to prove there, so eliminate the perceptions of him ending his hitting in a bad slump.

I don't think I would shut Ohtani down.

Just for his personal numbers, not that the Angels have a chance or anything.

Only 18 games left, let him play and see what happens. Then he can rest for a few months.

Yep and he’s basically had 5 of 14 days off this month.  We’ve had three days off and two NL games, he pinch hit in one of those.
