The way we united to care for the victims of the attacks and honor their lives, as well as support the recovery efforts in NYC, was great.

The way we united in fear and played into the hands of government officials who were eager to profit off an endless war and chip away at our individual rights and privacy ... was not great.

I believe you are right. I think that's going to be the legacy (long term view) of this era and its administrations. Sort of the way we tend to combine JFK, LBJ, Nixon, Ford and Carter as all the same general era, so too will we combine W, Obama, Trump and Biden. All different, one moderate, two very liberal, one extremely conservative, but the end result is still the same. Little by little, individual rights and privacy (what I call freedoms but the nomenclature doesn't matter) have been chipped away, and a select group of people and companies have profited from it.

There, I think I said one political post that hopefully offended no one.

This is the first time I've 100% agreed with something you've said politically.

But I'm still offended because you left out Reagan.

He's in a class of his own, really. Didn't fit in with the previous administrations, and he really butt heads with Bush Sr. policy wise (thought he was a good person outside of Washington). What really set him apart was he was the last president that seemed to be truly beloved and respected by both sides of the aisle and the media. Not sure we'll ever see that again.

This is a good post.

My wife woke me up after the second plane hit the second tower. Could hardly believe what I was seeing. Tried to soak in as much as I could as I knew we were going to spend the day talking about it at school and the kids would need to see calm and composure from me so they didn’t panic.

It was hard to leave home but school was still going to be open so I drove in. The second tower collapsed while I was on the freeway and I was pissed and in tears at how awful this was. I figured there’d easily be 20,000 dead.

The pentagon plane really shook up any part of me that wasn’t shook up already. Made me wonder where else they were headed. Then we heard rumors that the White House or Capitol or both were being evacuated. My head was spinning, and no one had any idea what else might be coming. We even heard rumors that Disneyland might be a target.

it was an emotionally brutal day. But on September 12, people started flying flags everywhere, especially on their cars. I miss that spirit of unity and love for country that became very prominent. Our differences were out of sight for a good while, and that was a wonderful thing to experience. I wish that spirit would have lasted a whole lot longer.

West Coast HS cancels 9/11 tribute, calls it ‘racially insensitive’: report

Students at a Washington state high school wanted to mark the 20th year since the Sept. 11 attacks by wearing red, white and blue at a Patriot’s Day-themed game but were refused because the event could "unintentionally cause offense to some who see it differently," according to a report.

Jason Rantz, a host on KTTH 770/94.5FM, reported that the event was canceled by an unnamed staffer at Eastlake High School in Sammamish "at the last minute." A student told the show that he was informed that the "red, white and blue was going to be seen as racially insensitive and may affect people in a way that we will not understand and for that reason that we were to change our theme."

The station posted a screengrab of an email from one of the school’s associate principals to a parent that said she understands the "sacrifice and values our flag represents, but I think they [school leadership] just did not want to unintentionally cause offense to some who see it differently."

And then you have people like this

The American flags on every car, and every person being united in their common belief in freedom. It was cool while it lasted.

I remember people started displaying the flag on their houses, every day. Before 9/11 most people only put out their flag on a holiday.

A lot of people here are too young to remember that but it was quite moving actually. It was an emotional time.

Last year, someone complained to my administration because they found my American flag mask to be offensive. I wore it on 9/11. Admin asked me to take it off and put on a different mask. I refused, and there's nothing they could do about it.

But yes, there are large swaths of people out there that are indeed offended by our flag, and that's why I said I felt we've lost our way again.

But I don't want to change the topic of this thread. 9/11 and everything it changed in our country, everyone has a story and honestly, I never get tired of hearing personal stories. It humanizes and unites us all.

I hadn't turned on the tv that morning - I was giving my wife a ride when I turned on the news radio and almost instantly heard the announcer in a choked up voice saying a 2nd plane had just hit the World Trade Center.  It was a lot to process all at once - but it was obvious we were under attack.   A little later, I was at home, and heard and spotted F-16's flying north at high throttle - these were probably those searching for flight 93.   Later, I saw F-15's patrolling overhead, carving turns in the sky.

I didn't really know anyone directly - I'd known someone at DCSPER in the Pentagon - but very distantly - and the father of a girl who played soccer with my daughter was on flight 77.  I was concerned about a co-worker who I knew was scheduled for a meeting at WTC that afternoon, but quickly heard he was fine.

(the next day, we had a meeting at Citigroup down the street to help them get their trader desks back on-line, and the guys who went told how they were escorted past/through the still burning ground zero - I was bummed Amtrak was down, otherwise I'd have been there - 'cause of course, you wanted to help in any way you could.)   Another co-worker had flown to CA the previous day, and with the grounding, wound up renting a car and driving back to VA.

Regarding the flag - my wife is buried at Arlington, and I put a flag up on Memorial Day in her honor, and never really feel right taking it down, so leave it up until after Veteran's Day, then pack it away for the winter.  If you're offended by my flag, well, I'm ok with you staying out of my neighborhood.
