Well, losing two MVP type players will ding you.  But it won't matter who they bring in if they continue to play trash defense.

For sure, but I think we might also need to adjust our expectations those those two going forward. With them next year maybe we are optimistically 10 games better? That puts them in contention but possibly still on the outside looking in... almost certainly outside if they are closer to their run differential than their actual record.

Not sure I need to worry about adjusting my expectations given my view of the team and it's issues.

If I haven't made it clear with my incessant whining about the defense, I don't think better overall health (and getting those two back), is  the key to contending.  I'm genuinely less concerned about the team's talent level and their potential than I am them playing to their ability.  Two years running the defense has undermined everything else.  I have zero reasons to believe that will change.

The bullpen needs to be addressed and they'll have some holes to fill at SS and C, but they really need to solve the defensive BS to turn it all around.

As is Seattle.

Seattle isn't really relevant

Seattle is within striking distance to the wildcard with a 3 game series against Boston starting tonight.  They seem relevant to me.....and it really pisses me off.

The conversation was about something deeper than their record.  Seattle has a great record but their run differential is more like a team that should be 5 games under .500, and the Angels should be about 7 games under.

They've still been outscored by 72 runs on the season (a worse differential than the Tigers and almost as bad as the Nationals).  They've played well in 1-run games, despite having a terrible bullpen.  It's a little fluky, to be honest.  They're playing about 5 games better than their run differential would indicate.  Only the Mariners are playing more above their expected level (well, technically Arizona is, too--but they're still awful...).

1 run games brings in Iglesias.  The middle bullpen would see to it the 1 run game turns into a 4 run game.

This is a numerical impossibility (unless they tie a game): they either finish at .500 (81 - 81) or they finish 80-82, which is two games under .500. (Apologies for the pedantry, this season has reduced me to it.)

Best post of the thread.
