Gameday Thread: Los Angeles Angels vs. San Diego Padres (9-7-2021)

These are the sort of one off games that make for fun viewing, regardless of the standings. An old fashioned low scoring game where every pitch matters. An no DH to get in the way.

Cool to see the no hitter adding tension. And the Angels cashed in the two walks with their first hit.

Angel pitching collectively out duelling Snell and company. And Adell's clutch at bat will help build confidence. Even Rengifo wasn't useless for a change.

It will be almost impossible to finish at .500 or better, but maybe playing hard against good teams will carry over into the mental side of next year for the young guys.

People take defense for granted.  That play by Marsh looked effortless and yet, because of how deep Trout usually plays I doubt he reaches that ball -- balls in on the OF are where he tends to "struggle" defensively.  I know it's heresy to say this in the eyes of many but the best OF alignment next year (IMO), really would be Trout/Marsh/Adell, from left to right.   It may ever help keep Trout on the field more.

Tommy Pham ...  just did his best Angels defense impersonation..   A plus..  Oscar worthy performance.

Completely agree, would love to see next year OF be from left to right, Trout/Marsh/Adell.

I don't know about David and Goliath--that might be an analogy that stretches this too much--but it was impressive.  I guess there's at least one advantage to being a mediocre team, a team with major talent injured, and one not likely to be in the postseason:  You get to try out some younger players and see if they have what it takes to be a regular in the following season, or at least a solid backup.  That's a ray of sunshine in the bottomless pit of Angels irrelevance.

Agree with your first couple of thoughts, but the last one is even more of an analogy that stretches too much, even more so than the one you quoted. 😄

That was pretty great - that crowd was lit up, Snell had been dealing (but seemed to lose his feel for the slider earlier that inning - maybe against Mayfield?)

At any rate, certainly a situation to be intimidated and to fold, but Adell delivered in a high-pressure situation - not bad!

(pretty funny how Mayfield stole 2nd and then scored without anyone noticing)

And what's the deal with Herget?  A career-minor leaguer, looking pretty good (so far, knock wood, etc)
