OC Register: Jo Adell’s grand slam powers Angels to late victory

Recommended Posts

Jo Adell saved the best for last.

Batting with two outs in a tie game in the ninth inning, Adell hit a grand slam to lift the Angels to a 8-2 win over the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday at Comerica Park. It was the first home run of the season for Adell, the 22-year-old outfielder who was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake on Aug. 2.

Early in the game, Adell had several chances to validate his consensus ranking as one of baseball’s best minor league prospects. With the bases loaded in the first inning, he flied out to right field with two outs. With a pair of runners on base in the third inning, he hit an inning-ending line drive to left field. Adell was 0 for 4 when he faced Tigers closer Gregory Soto in a 2-2 game in the ninth.

Soto (4-3) threw Adell a 1-and-1 fastball down the heart of the plate. Adell crushed the pitch 416 feet to left field, his fourth career home run.

“That was crazy because before the game me and (Mike) Trout had a conversation,” Adell told Bally Sports West after the game. “He was talking to me about staying on the fastball. That’s what I did. I came to the dugout and looked right at him. It was pretty electric.”

Kurt Suzuki followed with a home run of his own against Soto. A fielding error later in the inning allowed the Angels to tack on another run. After six runs scored with two outs, the final score hardly reflected the game’s first eight innings.

Angels starter Dylan Bundy allowed two runs over 4 ⅔ innings, and the Angels’ bullpen held the Tigers scoreless the rest of the way. Suzuki, Jose Iglesias, Brandon Marsh and Juan Lagares each had two of the Angels’ 12 hits. Jared Walsh drew four walks, something no Angel hitter has done since Trout in 2018.

Marsh nearly hit the go-ahead home run in the sixth inning. When a fan wearing Tigers paraphernalia reached over the fence and dropped a towering fly ball 427 feet from home plate in center field, the umpires reviewed the call with their replay room in Manhattan. Marsh could only smile as he was denied his first career homer.

One day before his 18th start of the season as a pitcher, Shohei Ohtani hit Casey Mize’s first pitch Tuesday for a single. On Mize’s third pitch, he stole second base. Ohtani was still on second when Brandon Marsh punched an RBI single into left field. Ohtani scored the game’s first run.

In the third inning, Jack Mayfield drove in David Fletcher with a two-out single, giving the Angels a 2-0 lead. It did not last long.

In the bottom of the third, Bundy walked Grayson Greiner and Robbie Grossman, then allowed a two-out single to Jonathan Schoop. In the fifth, Greiner doubled and scored when Grossman  ― batting for the third time in the game ― clubbed a two-out single. The game was tied, and the Angels’ bullpen took over.

Relief was abundant. Austin Warren pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Steve Cishek pitched a scoreless seventh. Mike Mayers (3-4) tossed a scoreless eighth. When Mayers pitched a scoreless ninth, it marked the third consecutive scoreless game for the Angels’ relief core.
