The first hit was always going to be a double but mainly because of where Adell was shifted.

This is the best time to get guys like Detmers, Marsh, Adell, Rodriguez some MLB experience. Angels aren't contending for shit the rest of the season so results aren't really important here. Let the young guys get 2 months vs MLB competition so they can struggle and work on improving their game and figuring things out.

The ball was hit exactly where the 3B would be in an exaggerated pull shift.  If you're going to play the 3B at the bag because of the runner, which obviously you have to do, you can't simply leave the other 3 fielders in the same place.  You have to move them to give yourself more coverage.
