OC Register: Angels’ Anthony Rendon to undergo season-ending hip surgery

Recommended Posts

ARLINGTON, Texas — Anthony Rendon will undergo surgery to repair a right hip impingement, ending a frustrating season for the Angels’ third baseman.

Rendon has had three separate stints on the injured list this season, including the past month with a hamstring injury, but during the rehab from that he began to have hip issues.

Rendon is expected to be ready for Opening Day 2022.

The second year of Rendon’s seven-year, $245-million contract has been a disappointment, with Rendon hitting .240 with six homers and a .712 OPS around the three injured list stints.

He also suffered a groin injury in April and a knee contusion in May.

NAUGHTON RECALLED

The Angels brought left-hander Packy Naughton to the big leagues for his debut and will use him in relief.

Naughton was acquired from the Cincinnati Reds in the Brian Goodwin trade last year.

Naughton, 25, had a 5.34 ERA at Double-A and Triple-A this season, with 51 strikeouts and 14 walks between the two levels.

In order to create a spot for Naughton on the 26-man roster, the Angels optioned Chris Rodriguez. It’s essentially a paperwork move, because Rodriguez’s next start is scheduled for Aug. 10, when the Angels have a doubleheader. Rodriguez can be recalled as the 27th man for one of the games of the doubleheader. In the meantime he will remain with the Angels as part of the taxi squad.

Naughton takes the 40-man roster spot cleared when Rendon went on the 60-day injured list.
