That or Virginia.

I know my vote doesn't mean anything, and I've never been to either state*, but I'd choose North Carolina over Virginia any day of the week.

*With the exception of visiting the Arlington National Cemetery, which is more like D.C. than Virginia.

Visited the Roanoke area a few months ago. Absolutely beautiful countryside. Talked to a builder about a home overlooking the lake with 2 acres of land, four car garage and 3,800 sqft of living space for @ $400k.

i'm planning to retire in six years. where we live will be a huge decision. LA has been my home for most of my life so there's a strong desire to stay here. but i'm tired of being in crowds or traffic anytime i want to go anywhere. i'm concerned about prices and taxes, especially since i'll be on a fixed income.

my brother just bought a new home in palm desert and has told us we can live there, but the desert sucks and i don't know if i could live with him 24/7 - pretty sure my wife isn't too fond of that idea either. i'd probably feel differently if he had bought a new home in ventura.

I have just the place for you and you'll be happy to know the price was slashed $400.

When I was just out of law school home prices had just doubled in 5-6 years and were probably 80% what they are now.  I thought the same thing.  Prices dipped during the recession a bit and we took advantage.  It’s not a millennial thing.  Plus, there are plenty of affordable places to live in America.  Perhaps you just can’t afford to buy in OC? I can’t afford the Newport Coast but I don’t whine about daily.  It’s just a reality.

Yeah, we've already determined we'll never be able to own a home in OC.

It's comical that Taylor wants to blame the housing inflation on Boomers but the truth is that Gen X were the major contributors. Boomers tap out in 1960 so if you run 25 years later when college grads are jumping into the housing market, that was Gen X flooding that market in 1985 and for the next twenty years hopping from entry level on upwards and selling to Gen Y as they started their entry level move. Boomers had already pretty much hit their income/housing ceiling long before this.

We've camped in our house for over 25 years along with my older brother in the same situation. My older sister sold and moved to New Mexico then came back and had to downsize. My other older brother moved to Arizona and sold his place, a third home that he had 10 years residency.

It's not Boomers that inflated the housing market. It was your Gen X Dad, @Taylor

My dad is a boomer (born in 1957). But I don't blame him for the housing crisis.

Even though real estate prices are climbing quickly here, I can understand why Angelenos make the move to the desert.

I wouldn't move to the desert. I hate sand. Its course, and ruff, and irritating. And it gets everywhere.
