Couple finds preserved fallout shelter from 1961 at newly bought home in the Valley.

Boy, does this bring back memories. I lived in Florida with a father in the military during the Cuban missile crisis. Some of my neighbors had these things built.  In school we practiced evacuation drills and brought in Civil Defense packages in case we had to evacuate. I also learned that the only thing that will protect you in the event of a direct nuclear strike is a school desk.

 

I find the instructions they gave us laughable now. We were taught to duck and cover our eyes if we saw the flash of a nuclear detonation overhead, when in all likelihood we would have been incinerated within seconds if it were that close. I'm sure that they had to at least imply that there was something we could do to protect ourselves in order to prevent widespread panic over the possibility.
