On April 27, Mr. Kuriyama (Nippon-Ham Fighters manager) commented on Ohtani-san, "He is instinctively playing as a Yakyu Kozoh. That's the best thing to do."
"Yakyu Kozoh" means a boy who is enthusiastic about baseball, in Japanese.

Dang, if Trout didn't get hurt, there would be a very good chance that he and Shohei finish #1 and #2 in the MVP voting.

With the schedule easing after the road trip to TB and NY, if the Halos can stay around .500 at the halfway point of the season, the second half could provide some interest as Trout returns and hopefully Rendon stays healthy.

I like that Japan has cool terms to describe simple nouns. To paint a picture.

The closest we have to match that, culture wise, is from the deep south. But theyre usually not elegant.

"Hes like a one legged cat, trying to bury turds on a frozen pond"

And we would still have a losing record.

Sorry for the pessimism,  but until some pitchers are DFA'd and we go with alternatives, there is little to be optimistic about

We're at .500 right now so I completely disagree. But we can take this conversation to another thread, this one's all things Ohtani not about the standings or what if's.

I didn't say anything about the Angels' record, just that we could have the #1 and #2 MVPs.

Comment was made with reference of Ohtani and Trout could have been 1 and 2 on mvp.

It was an off the cuff comment.  Moving on.

Sorry in Japanese English!

Nov. 13, 2106 WBC (World Baseball Classic) at Tokyo Dome home run

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aly3AnfUHdA

Ohtani's hit ball entered the gap between the glass fiber membranes on the ceiling of Tokyo Dome.
Tokyo Dome has an air support structure, the height of the highest part of the ceiling is 61.69m (about 202ft) above the playing surface.
The height of the roof is based on the data of the tallest fly by Babe Ruth.

# At the sports news shows in Japan, it is excited about Ohtani's participation (as a first Japanese player and the first pitcher) in the Home Run Derby.
# Some people are worried about breaking the batting form and excessive impact on his body.

Corrected on June 30, 2021
Tokyo Dome special rule
Q What if the hit ball is caught in a hole or gap in the ceiling?
A dead ball. If it is within the fair area, both the batter and the runner will be given ground rule double.

So, it was a double instead of a home run.

I mistake.

Sorry, it should be "2016 practice game at Tokyo Dome for 2017 WBC (World Baseball Classic) "

Ohtani-san made a goal achievement sheet when he entered high school.

https://www.sponichi.co.jp/baseball/news/2013/02/02/gazo/G20130202005109500.html

In the right side 3 cells of the center 9 cells,,
Sharpness (of pitching)
Speed 160km/h (100miles/h)
Breaking ball

I think he wanted to play an active role as a pitcher.

The goal is to surpass Yusei Kikuchi (Mariners), who was also born in Iwate prefecture and was a senior in high school.
In the center of the goal achievement sheet, there is "Nominated by 8 teams in Japanese professional baseball draft".
Kikuchi was nominated by 6 teams.

That is my concern too, that the HR Derby could alter how he bats after the ASG.

Both pitching and hitting in the ASG would be great to see.

https://sabr.org/journal/article/home-run-derby-curse-fact-or-fiction/

According to the guys at SABR, it shouldn't be a problem as the curse is fictional. It makes the case that those that did experience a drop-off post HR derby would have dropped off regardless. Interesting article.
