ANAHEIM — The Angels fans who had been waiting more than a year to boo the Houston Astros finally got their chance on Monday night.

The Angels then delivered the most satisfying revenge, beating the Astros, 7-6, on a night that was filled with jeers and colorful chants and two trash cans tossed onto the field.

The Angels scored four runs in the eighth inning to complete the comeback from an early four-run deficit. It was the third time in the first five games that the Angels had come from behind in the eighth inning, on their way to their first 4-1 start since 2007.

Down 5-3, Albert Pujols and José Iglesias each singled, and then pinch-hitter Shohei Ohtani was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Dexter Fowler, who had earlier struck out on three pitches with the bases loaded, singled to drive in a run.

A David Fletcher groundout drove in the tying run. And then Jared Walsh grounded to first and Ohtani slid home ahead of Yuli Gurriel’s errant throw to put the Angels ahead.

After a Mike Trout intentional walk, Anthony Rendon hit a sacrifice fly for an insurance run.

Mike Mayers then closed it out, allowing a solo homer to Kyle Tucker. Closer Raisel Iglesias got the night off after recording five outs on Sunday.

Aside from the victory, the fans seemed to thoroughly enjoy booing the Astros at every opportunity.

The Astros, of course, had played in empty stadiums last season. Fans couldn’t wait to let them know what they thought of the cheating scandal from 2017, in which they stole catcher’s signs from a monitor beside the dugout and banged on a trash can to signal what pitches were coming.

José Altuve, Yuli Gurriel, Alex Bregman and Carlos Correa are the four key holdovers from that team, so they received most of the boos.

All four of them responded with singles in the first inning, though, helping the Astros jump to a 3-0 lead. The third run scored when catcher Kurt Suzuki didn’t catch a third strike that would have ended the inning.

José Quintana briefly steadied himself after that disappointing debut inning with the Angels. He struck out four over the next two scoreless innings, but then got knocked out when he allowed three of the first four hitters in the fourth to reach. One of them scored to put the Astros up, 4-0.

Trout then hit his first homer of the season, a 417-foot shot down the left field line, to put the Angels on the board. Trout, who also singled and walked twice, is 6 for 15 with eight walks through the season’s first five games.

After Trout’s homer, three subsequent singles pulled them within 4-2 and they had the bases loaded with one out, but Fowler struck out on three pitches and Fletcher lined out to left.

The Angels rallied again in the fifth, cutting the deficit to 4-3, but they left two runners on base.

Rookie Chris Rodriguez gave up a run in the sixth, and the Angels trailed by two runs before their rally in the eighth.
