Baseball America: “They [Angels] have no bullpen,” one opposing scout said. “It’s going to be a big issue.”

Kinda. The problem is that most years it sucks. If the attitude is always, "it might be good so let's not do much but pick up a few random arms," then chances are it will generally suck. And that's been the approach that the Angels have taken for some years now.

That said, C Rod and Sandoval could go a long way to improving the pen. Maybe Suarez finally puts it together. Some potential there.

Genius.

This.

I don’t believe anyone can evaluate a bullpen in spring training. Guys throw very few innings. Also, it doesn’t take much to swing a bullpen from being bad to good or vice versa, even within a season.

I agree.

Big surprise, throwing your hands up and hoping for the best has failed to yield results for the nth straight year. Can't wait to do this again next year.

And not surprisingly, the two players that actually represented meaningful investment/development - CRod and Iglesias - have been the only two relievers to yield good results.

There have been alot of question marks with certain move's the angels have made...

Why isn't Pena in the Bullpen? he's had sucess, yet he's only thown 1.2 innings? why? there are more benfits with him in the Bp than some of the other guys.

Why chance Mayers sequences? last year he threw sliders most of the time, than the 4 seam and lastly cutters, This year he's thrown more cutters than any thing and has found little sucess with that pitch. Why not have him throw more four seams and slider and lower the cutter usage? His slider and 4 seam are still deadly.

What the F is up with Barria? why isn't he getting a shot? we wasted 8 Mil on Quintana, 8 Mil on Harvey, just Barria has out pithed them..just why? We can easily spend 8 mil on spot we need to fix, rather than try to sign a 4/5. We wasted 2 years of cheap control, which was stupid.

If the guys we have are not working, why not call up the guys in the Minor, they can't be any worst than what we have. Call up ortega, Higgins, Taylor and DFa the garbage in the Bp.

“The bullpen is a crapshoot” is a ridiculous moneyball mantra that got them into this situation.

If you take the statement to mean your collection of very good relievers can collectively have a bad year, then yes, it’s a crapshooot.

If you think you can throw together a pile of dog shit and have it turn a winning bullpen then you deserve to lose.

If the bullpen was truly a crapshoot then we would see random shifts among teams with the best bullpens.  Yet we frequently see teams with consistently good bullpens with only exception being outlier years.

Would it make more sense if we just said acquiring bullpen arms in free agency is a crapshoot?  Because it is.

It's no more than a crapshoot of signing any pitcher through FA.  In fact I am not sure if it's any more of a crapshoot than signing any position player through FA.

But it absolutely is more of a crap shoot.  Name the top 5 free agent relievers coming into this year, then do it with position players?  Now compare how they are performing compared to their norms.  Here are the relievers:

Hendricks- amazing

Rosenthal- out for the year

Yates- out for the year

Hand- good

Colome- pretty poor
