Looks like he was claimed off waivers from Houston in November.  He's 30 years old and has 112 PA over the last two years.

Honestly, I'm mildly surprised they're wasting 40-man space on either of these guys, but I guess this just goes to show that they have no problem shifting guys off and on it as needed.

That won’t happen for a couple months, as of now he’s an over rated prospect from another organization that isn’t as good as Livan Soto right now.

Mayfield seems like a downgrade from Robel Garcia in terms of potential. He also doesn't seem the sort that you'd promote over Franklin Barreto or Luis Rengifo. Seems like an inconsequential move.

That said, the guy did post these numbers in AAA in 2019 in Round Rock for the Astros.

This is probably just the Angels trying to improve their AAA depth.

They brought in Mayfield and DFA'd Garcia, hoping that Garcia can clear waivers and they can stash him in AAA and outside of their 40-man roster. Then, in a couple weeks, they may even DFA Mayfield and hope he clears waivers in order to stash him in AAA and off the 40-man roster.

You're seeing lots of teams do this right now.
