The Angels plugged an outfield hole by acquiring Dexter Fowler from the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday night.

The Angels are sending cash or a player to be named back to the Cardinals, who are also paying a portion of Fowler’s $16.5 million salary in 2021, which is the final year of his contract.

Fowler, 34, is a switch hitter who can play all three outfield spots, making him a good fit for the Angels. He provides a cushion to allow Jo Adell to get more seasoning at Triple-A, a defensive replacement for Justin Upton and even a backup to Mike Trout in center field.

Fowler had a .706 OPS and four home runs during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, down from his career mark of .776. He has a career .358 on-base percentage, including a .346 mark in his last full season, 2019.

Fowler is reunited with Joe Maddon, who managed him with the Chicago Cubs in 2015 and 2016.

So far the Angels have acquired three players who Maddon managed with either the Cubs or Tampa Bay Rays: Fowler, Jose Quintana and Alex Cobb.

More to come on this story.
