They're just human, what do you expect?  The argument is they get "most" calls right. 

 

I suppose we should look at the shiny side of the penny and be thrilled they are not Air Traffic Controllers.

Honestly just another reason I am starting to dislike baseball more and more. Baseball needs to get instant replay and the strike zones fixed and make them universal. Because It is the only sport that has different rules for totally different umpires. Baseball is such a dinosaur sometimes.

Umpires get most calls right that aren't at all close.  It's probably a 30-40% success rate on close plays.

 

No, they get a good amount of those close calls right.  We just remember the ones they get wrong. 

 

 

But assuming they have no idea what they are doing in 50/50 plays, well, the average would be 50/50.  If they just suck at close plays, it's inherently going to be 50 percent right or wrong. 

 

There is no possible way you are bias towards the wrong outcome unless you are trying to get the wrong outcome.
