Yeah. The past few years it's almost always been Smith and Mota, with Trent Rush or Mark Gubicza occasionally filling in for a couple of games at most each spring.

From what I can tell, looking back, it was March 3rd when the Angels hired Victor Rojas.

So I'd assume that they'd hire the new PBP around a similar time, and March 3rd is coming up in less than a week, so...

I doubt it happens, but I hope that the Angels have more radar gun readings on their broadcasts in Spring.

They don't have them except at one or two stadiums in the Cactus League, but perhaps more teams have added them.

Tempe Diablo Stadium has a terrible scoreboard.

Fits in with the lack of seats, the ridiculous concourse, and pathetic sound system.

Chuck - I missed your initial post on this thread - so apparently they have someone in mind who can't make it until after Spring Training -- perhaps some one with March Madness pbp duties?

I could be OK with that - sort of a snub to Terry Smith - who I like on the pbp call.

As long as the new guy with possible March Madness obligations isn't BILL WALTON.  I commented in a response to another thread where an AW poster joked that 'Hawk Harrelson' is available - that the best  description I could give of that that would be like to have BILL WALTON doing our Halos Play By Play.....LOL !!!

I get the MLB audio package each year - actually I never cancel it after the season so I pay $2.99 a month in the off-season as well.

But it's a heck of a deal -- all MLB games, home and away.

but I'm a dinosaur throw back old school guy who would rather listen to the game on the radio anyway.

that's why I probably like Terry Smith's call more than most here -- I have listened to a lot of Terry Smith called games over the years and after a while it's an acquired taste and the regular pbp guy becomes 'your guy' ---

When the Angels switched from Physioc to Rojas (that seems like two years ago and, of course, was probably more like 10 or 12 - please don't say 15) I did notice the quality upgrade day one.  Physioc has been one of the Kansas City Royals announcers since then ( Rex the Wonder Dog is also on that broadcast team but not always or ever teamed with Physioc)

The KC regular pbp guy -  is the son of Jimmy Leferbvre (former Dodger and 1965 ROY) . He's pretty good pbp guy.

I don't mind Terry Smith.  It's a lot for him to be doing a game himself, but it would be that way with anyone. That's why it's generally not done these days.  Even Snoop and Ron Burgundy are only good in lesser doses.

Over the years, I have gotten into a lot of message board arguments here, with a ton of different board members, over a ton of different topics.

I have never disagreed more on any subject than with the people who posit that Terry Smith is even an adequate baseball announcer.

Terry Smith is so bad. Just an example in like the second inning:

Terry: "And that one (note, "that one" is his description for every pitch) is in there for strike one."

Reality: Breaking ball outside the plate for ball one.

Not having listened to every other MLB radio announcer, I can't say this definitively, but I can't possibly imagine anyone worse than Terry Smith.

Not only does he not pay attention to the game half the time, even when he does, he either talks too slowly to keep up with the play or describes it in such a way that no one has any clue what's going on.  I wish there was a clip of the triple play that was turned on the Angels in 2019 available somewhere.  It was like listening to a person with dementia.

I find it hilarious that anyone would consider him not only a competent announcer, but one that was worthy of getting bumped up to the TV gig.  I have no idea how he is still employed on the radio unless those in charge just don't care, because he's a nice guy.
