Darvish may be available

Whoa! Cubs have a surprise trade chip

There’s been a lot of trade chatter swirling around Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant, who is heading into his final year before free agency, as well as shortstop Javier Báez and first baseman Anthony Rizzo.

But if Chicago truly wants to shake up its roster and improve its chances of building a consistent World Series title contender in the years to come, it needs to put another star on the trade block: right-hander Yu Darvish, who is signed for another three years and owed $59 million.

It wouldn’t be an easy decision for president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer. Darvish finished second in the National League Cy Young Award race after posting a 2.01 ERA with a 0.96 WHIP and 93 K’s in 76 innings this past season.

But here’s why the Cubs should consider it.

I’d prefer to target Carlos Carrasco, but Darvish would be a good pickup.

Carrasco is a great target.  The Indians appear desperate to unload salary.  Carrasco likely would not cost too much in a trade - certainly not Adell, Marsh, etc.  We can probably build a trade around Jackson or someone in that tier of prospect.

While I assume Plesac isn’t available, and that the Indians wouldn’t be willing to trade both Carrasco and Plesac, it’s fun to think about acquiring both. The cost would be tremendous, but it would solve the rotation issues and leave lots of money to address RF and catcher.

Yeah, I'm guessing Pleasac won't be available, since he isn't arbitration eligible yet and the Indians likely want to hang onto as many good, cheap young players as possible.

Still, we could potentially swing trades for both Darvish and Carrasco, which would add ~32mil in salary, but we'd be gaining significant value with a much shorter contract term than Bauer would require.

Carrasco is more durable than Darvish, and owed 3 years as well but for $7 million less per season.

Both are 33/34.

Just wondering if anyone has started to look at durability differently over the last couple of years?

It used to be: “This guy is more durable” based on their actual injury history.

Now I find myself thinking: “This guy already had his TJ vs this guy that hasn’t yet.”

I might catch some heat for saying this, but I prefer Darvish to Bauer. Darvish has been an ace for a long time, and I think it would just be cool to have the two best pitchers in Japanese history (from a tools standpoint) pitching for the Angels at the same time. Plus Darvish is under control only three years, making it less of a risk if he bombs and he's going to command less in finances than Bauer. There's also the familiarity with Maddon.

I think Yu Darvish perfectly fits what this team needs right now.

And Carrasco has worked extensively under Callaway’s tutelage in the past.

Darvish was nails last year but it was a short season, he's 34, owed 59M through the next 3 seasons and hasn't pitched more than 180 innings since 2013.  If he's the best the Angels can do as far as bringing in a starter sure but I don't think he should be one of the primary targets.

How come your screen name is Catwhoshatinthehat, but your avatar says Cat who shat in *his* hat?

It’s the exception, not the rule, but I could very well see Darvish age as well as Verlander, Scherzer, Kuroda, Kershaw, Greinke, etc.

Some pitchers can maintain/reinvent it. I feel like Darvish already went through his real career hiccup a couple years back.

I’m thinking it’s better to hold on to all three key OF prospects (Adell, Marsh, Adams) for another season.

Then if Adams has had good success in AA by the end of the 2021 season, Adell would be more likely to be dealt and hopefully having had a big AAA season and some success late in the season up here?
