OC Register: Angels acquire closer Raisel Iglesias from Reds

Recommended Posts

The Angels shored up the back end of their bullpen by acquiring closer Raisel Iglesias from the Cincinnati Reds on Monday.

The Angels shipped reliever Noe Ramirez and a player to be named or cash to the Reds for Iglesias. The Angels are also receiving cash from the Reds to pay a portion of Iglesias’ $9.125 million salary in his final year before free agency.

Iglesias, 30, averaged 31 saves with a 2.97 ERA over the last three full seasons, before posting eight saves with a 2.74 ERA in a shortened 2020 season.

The Angels struggled to get consistent work out of any of their closer candidates in 2020, and last week they non-tendered Hansel Robles and Keynan Middleton, two of the pitchers expected to contribute in the ninth inning.

It is the second significant trade by new Angels GM Perry Minasian, who last week picked up — coincidentally — shortstop José Iglesias from the Baltimore Orioles. Both players are from Cuba.

More to come on this story.
