don't know if I've ever heard of a network give up their name for what amounts to advertising money.  this is a new one to me.  I don't have access to the article so I wasn't able to read about the details.  Odd that it's just Bally's though which I thought was owned by Caesars.

Remember, though, that the Fox sports stations were sold to Sinclair Broadcasting Group last year, so some sort of name change was inevitable.  Just didn't think it would be Bally's! They're making a big push to increase the brand visibility, as they think there's a high likelihood that more states will legalize sports betting.  They'll also be running gambling-related content on the other non-sports-focused Sinclair stations.

The Bally's name as a trademark is a confusing mess.  Caesars just sold the trademark name for casinos last month to a company that was called Twin River.  That company has now changed their name to Bally's Corporation and apparently intends to re-brand their casinos and racetracks to the Bally's name.

Caesars still owns the Bally's Las Vegas property and apparently keeps the rights to that name in Las Vegas.  Maybe they'll rename that property in the future.

The deal with our favorite local sports network is with this recently renamed company, not Caesars.  Best I can tell, the nearest property this company owns to SoCal is in Colorado, the Arapahoe Park race track in Aurora, CO.  Presumably this is a marketing move in aid of Bally's online sports betting segment.

The whole deal is kind of strange.

EDIT - Ah, I see now the deal is with the whole of the Fox Sports regional networks, not just FSW.  So, okay.  Proximity of their physical properties to SoCal isn't relevant.

They took a large write off to reflect their overpay for the networks.  With that and the naming rights maybe they will adjust their rates so that the many services that dumped them will take them back.

Bingo -- 2020 (besides CV) meant the end of FSW on the networks.  I've been following around switching streaming networks when after it gets dropped.  Now Hulu-Live has dropped it and there is nothing left if you stream.  My sports fandom was already starting to wane; but inability to watch said sports is going to be the death nail for me.

so the only way to stream live is through a VPN and MLBtv ?

AT&T streaming still has them but I don’t like their service.  I’m sure that, if nothing changes, they will drop them as well once their contract is up.

I’m happy that Sinclair is taking a hit on this one.  They figured they could use the FSN’s as leverage when renewing their local properties with carriers.  I think we are at a crossroads with live sports. Rights holders and teams treated them as the golden goose for a long time but non sports subscribers are getting tired of paying for the rights.

I take that back...AT&T Now looks like the only remaining streaming service that would work.

Yeah AT&T has it. But to be able to stream anything, you have to have their most expensive plan, which is about $200 a month.  I expect them to drop FSW when the contract is up, which i heard is in  about a year.  That would pretty much put FSW out of business.

AT&T is a non-starter for me.  Not to mention, as Greg says, the cost is ridiculous.

They tried to hook me into it. The cost for the first year was tempting, but then it soared off past DirecTV territory for less service. I don't understand it, since AT&T doesn't have any infrastructure or network to maintain, no maintenance technicians, no installers, etc.
