OC Register: Angels pitcher Griffin Canning among Gold Glove finalists

Recommended Posts

Griffin Canning was listed among the three finalists for the American League Gold Glove at pitcher on Thursday. He is the only Angels player with a chance to win a Gold Glove when the winners are announced Nov. 3.

The other two finalists are Kenta Maeda of the Minnesota Twins and Zach Plesac of the Cleveland Indians.

Gold Gloves are normally determined by a vote of managers and coaches, along with a statistical component, but this year only the metrics were used because teams did not play games against the teams in the other two divisions in their league.

Shortstop Andrelton Simmons, who has won four Gold Gloves, missed the cut for the award after an ankle injury cost him half of the 60-game season.

Center fielder Mike Trout, third baseman Anthony Rendon and infielder David Fletcher also came up empty, despite good defensive reputations. In Trout’s case, his reputation among scouts and coaches is much better than the way he’s rated by the metrics.

Canning, 24, pitched 56-1/3 innings this season, with a 3.99 ERA.
