OC Register: Angels fans take their shot at luring Trevor Bauer

Trevor Bauer, the top pitcher on the free agent market this offseason, has been making use of his social media presence this winter to encourage fans to make their pitch to him.

So far this month he’s solicited fans of the Padres, Red Sox, Nationals, Yankees, Blue Jays and Orioles, and on Tuesday morning he invited Angels fans (and Dodgers fans, for that matter) to sell their teams to him.

Hey @Angels fans, I see y’all in my mentions a lot so ahead of my flight to LA later today, sell me your team in one tweet. Why should a player want to be an Angel? See y’all soon!

Many of the responses, which totaled about 2,800 in the first four hours, were straightforward pleas for baseball reasons, including the chance to play with Mike Trout, Anthony Rendon, Shohei Ohtani. Some cited Manager Joe Maddon. Others touted the Southern California weather and the beaches.

Get to play with a couple of the best players/people ever, solid manager, weather is great, we have the offense we just need a pitcher or two to put us over the top, fans will respect you, get to live on the beach, solid defensive team and we need you. Go Halos!!

A few were slightly more creative, though, including citing Bauer’s perceived bad blood toward the Houston Astros.

You’d get to face the Astros 19 times in a full length season You could strike them out, shut them up, and strut off the mound 19 times a year

This fan even appealed to Bauer’s well-known off-field interests.

The Los Angeles Angels came up short in their run at signing Gerrit Cole last offseason, settling for Dylan Bundy and Julio Teheran as the big additions to a middling rotation.

Bundy emerged as the staff ace, while Griffin Canning and Andrew Heaney both turned in solid seasons, providing a solid foundation for a good starting rotation if L.A. can find a bona fide ace.

Bauer is that ace.

Ideally, the Angels would find a long-term solution, but they can't afford to squander another year of Mike Trout's prime. They have the money to sign Bauer to an enormous one-year deal, and that would immediately vault them into contention in the AL wild-card picture.

With a new general manager incoming after the firing of Billy Eppler, it's going to be a big offseason for the organization.

Hopefully Ohtani will return to early 2018 form.
