Funny, but Albert is on pace for roughly the same kind of season (pro rated) that he's had the last few years. Batting average in the 240s, Homer's in the high teens/ lower twenties. Not good enough considering his other flaws but for someone his age and injury history not terrible either. But his playing time still needs to be reduced more next year. It's a shame that he couldn't have just declined more slowly. Such a steep and dramatic difference from his Cardinal days.

The advent of the shift hastened his decline.

I'm more inclined to say the seven surgeries in 9 seasons had more to do with it. The man has little left of his lower body that isn't damaged. His retirement years are going to be a daily Advil challenge.

That was going to happen regardless -- but he's one of the RHBs most heavily dinged by the shift.  Baseball Prospectus was the first to write about it and then Alden Gonzales had this piece...  https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/24270231/mlb-how-shift-ruined-albert-pujols

From 2015 to 2018, Pujols has accumulated a whopping 403 hard-hit outs, putting balls in play that travel at least 95 mph. Nobody has more. His average exit velocity is 90.3 mph, ranked fourth among those with at least 1,700 batted balls during that stretch, according to Statcast. His batting average on balls in play is .245, tied for the lowest in the majors among qualified hitters during that time.

Pujols shrugs.

"What can you do, bro?"

It's been reduced dramatically already.

He wouldn't be playing at all if Ohtani didnt suck right now.
