So Trout is the AL MVP, right?

Someone on MLB Network this morning said Trout and Rendon would cancel each other out.  Bizarre.  Maybe way back when voters were more likely to be homers... and guys basically had to be on winning teams.  And maybe they didn't vote for as many?  But now?  It makes no sense.

This year is interesting.  You have guys competing for these awards that had zero common opponents.

I would say there are still a majority number of homer sports writers out there. If there is a decent argument to be made for the home town player usually the local writer with the vote will put him first even if it's debatable. It's not so common anymore but virtually every winning team would have a representative high up on the MVP votes list, and this often came down to the narrative of who sportswriters thought was singularly most responsible for that team's success. When the answer to that question wasn't clear you would see vote splitting. Obviously that won't be an issue for the Angels this year. I could see the opposite effect though, where the team is so bad writers have a hard time placing Trout and Rendon so high.

I don't know why they couldn't have given the West it's own wild card. Records are not comparable between divisions, so the wild card selections are almost random and arbitrary in nature.
