Agree Stassi is the biggest surprise but I'm putting my vote for the guy I had the lowest expectations for...

It's Bundy for me.

I am always hesitant to go after guys requiring a major rework.... and with the Angels rotation being the shambles it was last year he was far and away the one guy I wanted no part of.  But he's done it.  Props to him or Callaway, but he's moved away from the FB and looked like a completely different pitcher.

Seems like a good dude too.

Max Stassi is batting .333 with an OPS of 1.262.

Max Stassi.

Let that marinate for a minute.

Seems like it's not a fluke either as I remember him hitting the ball hard in ST and during the few games I watched in Summer Camp.

I read somewhere that he made some changes to his approach at the plate and some tweaks to his stance/swing prior to spring training.

I also voted for Stassi.

Stassi is making $800,000 this year and has two more years of club control.  Acquiring him was a gamble by Eppler, and I doubt his offense will continue at this level, but given the lack of true catching prospects in the minors it’s looking like a good gamble.

I voted for Fletcher, only because I think Stassi is on a bigger hot streak and will come back down to Earth. Fletch is also on a hot streak, but I can realistically see his batting average level out at >.300 and OBP in the high .300s.

Not really. There's plenty of examples of the Halos giving big hitters, big contracts and then they disappoint. It's still early in an awkward season though

It's still early. I just thought Rendon and Trout would be power houses together. Been disappointed in his offense. But yes definitely early.

So far there have been good surprises and bad surprises. The good has been starting pitching, minus the Ohtani starts. Heaney and Bundy have been better than expected. Canning has looked sharp too.Even Sandoval pitched a good game. Hitting wise, Fletcher, Goodwin and Stassi have all been better than expected, especially Stassi.

The bad has to be the bullpen. Maybe the worst pen in Angels history. Rendon, and Upton have been terrible on offense. And i think Albert should call it quits after this season. And hopefully Upton is sent packing after the season to anywhere. Even if he becomes the next dfa contract the org has to eat.

I see a lot of pitchers also being dfa'd after this season. Hopefully, some of the pitchers drafted during the last 3 years can fill up the pen next season.  I am tired of Epplers dumpster diving for relievers. What we thought would be a short term fix for the pen has become routine.

As surprising as Stassi's bat has been so far, he's edged out by the K King, Upton.

Who K's 17 times (just 3 BBs) in 40 at bats, with a .125 BA?   And yet is still owed some $60 million.

This makes Wells circa 2011 look like Stassi.

Update:  Okay, I changed it to Stassi.   4 HRs and 9 rbis already, and a stratospheric OPS?

Upton is still terrible though, now hitting .116 (.188 OBP).

Stassi has been very good. Castro has shown some power too. The biggest surprise is how far Upton has fallen. It’s like when Hamilton had to stop using steroids. He just sucked after that. Upton just declined naturally and now he really does play like Melvin.

I voted for Stassi. Will it last, doubtful, but it's a great story right now.

I know he's not living up to the contract, but he has a .395 OBP and a 105 OPS+. If this is him playing like crap, wait until he gets hot. He's played good defense at 3rd, too. The difference between a good player and great player is that a great player can contribute even when the balls aren't falling in for hits. Rendon has certainly done that. The money matters, but if we signed Rendon to be a defensive specialist 3B and leadoff hitter and he put up his current stats for $15 million a year, we'd all be pretty thrilled.
