Julio Teheran was one pitch away from ending the third inning Wednesday in Seattle. He’d waited for COVID-19 to pass through his system, and for his arm to get back up to speed at the Angels’ alternate training site.

Now he’d thrown 17 pitches in a scoreless inning in a scoreless game, only to see Manager Joe Maddon hustling to the mound to make a pitching change.

It was an earlier ending than Teheran might have envisioned. And it might have cost the Angels a win.

Left-hander Ryan Buchter took over for Teheran. Three pitches later, Kyle Seager crushed a three-run home run to give the Mariners the lead for good in an eventual 7-6 win.

The Angels lost despite getting two home runs from Mike Trout, and one each from David Fletcher and Max Stassi. Left-hander Marco Gonzales (2-1) limited the Angels to three hits, all solo home runs, in seven innings.

Trout’s home runs were his third and fourth of the season. The first barely cleared the glove of a leaping Kyle Lewis in center field, and brought the Angels within 4-3 in the sixth inning. It followed a line-drive blast to left field from Fletcher, his second homer in as many games.

In the eighth inning, Trout pounced on a hanging slider from reliever Taylor Williams, pummeling it into the second deck of seats in left field. Since he returned following the birth of his son, Trout has three home runs in seven at-bats.

Trailing 7-6 in the ninth inning, the Angels could not score against Mariners closer Carl Edwards Jr. The right-hander retired Albert Pujols, pinch hitter Brian Goodwin, and Jo Adell in order to end the game, the last two via strikeout.

Seattle took a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning when Dylan Moore doubled and scored on a Kyle Lewis single. That was the only run Matt Andriese allowed in three innings of relief. The right-hander started and threw 1 2/3 innings in a losing effort against the Astros last Friday.

Before the game, Maddon targeted 60 pitches for Teheran (0-1) in his 2020 debut. Teheran needed 52 pitches to get through 2 2/3 innings. It was the second-shortest start of his career. Angels starters are averaging little more than 4 innings per start this season.

Teheran was charged with two earned runs when Seager homered against Buchter. He allowed two hits of his own, walked two batters, and struck out two.

The Mariners didn’t put the game out of reach until the seventh inning. Angels pitcher Noe Ramirez got two quick outs, then allowed consecutive singles to Lewis and Seager.

The next batter, Austin Nola, hit a fly ball between Trout and Adell in right-center field. Adell was closer to the ball, but the rookie let Trout attempt a diving catch instead. The ball fell for a double, and Lewis and Seager scored to put the Angels in a 6-3 hole. A ground-rule double by Evan White skipped under Adell’s glove, scoring Nola to make it 7-3.

The Angels (4-8) and Mariners (5-8) swapped places in the American League West standings.
