I don't believe he started drawing attention until he reached AAA. He was basically right around the Angels #20 prospect to that point, considered a really good glove with his bat an afterthought.

Yeah, and even then, he wasn't really well regarded until he started succeeding at the ML level. He's similar to Calhoun in that regard.
