OC Register: Patrick Sandoval has rough start in Angels’ final exhibition game

Recommended Posts

ANAHEIM — Patrick Sandoval gave up five runs in three innings in his final bid for a spot on the Angels’ opening day roster on Wednesday night.

Sandoval started the Angels’ 5-4 loss to the San Diego Padres, the final exhibition game before the opener on Friday in Oakland.

The Angels are set to begin the season with a rotation of Andrew Heaney, Dylan Bundy, Shohei Ohtani, Griffin Canning and Matt Andriese, but Sandoval was in the running for the sixth spot. The Angels need a sixth starter occasionally because Ohtani pitches every seven days while the other starters work every five or six.

Sandoval did not allow a hit and he faced the minimum six hitters in the first two innings. In the third, the five-run inning was built on six singles, including two that didn’t leave the infield. The inning was stopped with two outs because of Sandoval’s pitch count.

Andriese then pitched two scoreless innings.

Offensively, most of the Angels regulars took two at-bats and then came out of the game. Andrelton Simmons hit a double and a homer.

The Angels’ previous two exhibition games were on the road, so this was an opportunity to get a look at how Angel Stadium will host a game without fans. There was piped-in crowd noise — as all teams will use this season — and there were highlight videos between innings. The Angels did not have any cutouts of fans filling the empty seats, though.

Ads covered several sections of empty seats beyond the right field fence.

There were also no appearances on the scoreboard by the Rally Monkey, even though the Angels trailed in the late innings.
