OC Register: Healthy Griffin Canning tosses six scoreless in final tuneup for Angels

Recommended Posts

Griffin Canning’s final tuneup for the regular season was an unqualified success.

Canning pitched six scoreless innings in the Angels exhibition against the Padres on Monday night in San Diego. He threw 76 pitches.

It was Canning’s first competitive outing since he had to be shut down during spring training with an elbow issue. He subsequently had a platelet rich plasma injection and rested for about a month, before ramping up his throwing again in May.

Since then he had been facing Angels hitters in live batting practice or intrasquad games, but he hadn’t gotten the chance to see another uniform until Monday night.

One of the keys for him, he said, was finding a good routine in between innings. He kept his elbow warm and used vibration between innings and he feels like that will be a key for staying healthy.

“It’s just something I have to continue to manage and continue to find that routine that works for me,” he said. “Tonight was definitely a step in the right direction.”

Canning, who is likely to make his season debut next Monday in the final game of the season-opening four-game series in Oakland, was not just healthy, but effective against the Padres.

He got ahead all night, which allowed him to be efficient with his pitch-count. He was at just 56 pitches after five innings, before getting through a 20-pitch sixth.

Canning struck out five — including Manny Machado twice — and he walked two.

“This is something that I can come back to and watch,” Canning said. “I can kind of take all the good good stuff from this outing and kind of use it for myself come forward.”
