OC Register: Jaime Barria has solid outing against Angels regulars in intrasquad game

Recommended Posts

ANAHEIM — Jaime Barria, who is in the running for opportunities as the Angels’ sixth starter, worked parts of four strong innings against the team’s regular hitters in an intrasquad game on Wednesday night.

Barria gave up just one run, although the fourth inning was ended with two outs and the bases loaded to control his pitch count.

The Angels are expected to start the season with Andrew Heaney, Dylan Bundy, Shohei Ohtani, Griffin Canning and Matt Andriese as their top five starters. They will use a sixth starter occasionally to plug holes because Ohtani is set to pitch once a week.

Relievers Ryan Buchter and Jacob Barnes followed Barria to the mound and each retired all four batters he faced. Barnes struck out Mike Trout, Ohtani and Albert Pujols in his inning.

Chris Rodriguez, one of the Angels’ top pitching prospects, started on the other side. He did not allow a run in three innings against lineup of mostly Triple-A players.

The Angels stepped up the ballpark experience for their first night intrasquad game, with public address announcements, music and crowd noise synched up to the action.

Barria deserves a spot in the rotation. it was only a few years ago, that most of us viewed him as a 3/4. plus alot of things went against Barria last year, losing your spot on the last day of spring training, to some guy that threw 0 innings with us, than getting send back and forth between AAA and mlb. Let's also be honest, Ausmus and White had no F'en clue on what they were doing....the game plan for them was basically, Fb up, slider down....and repeat.

Also include using an opener with him when he has had success as a starter and struggled with an opener
